Brentford have had a brilliant preseason. With two teams to work with the Brentford Women squad grew and grew over the summer. We played friendlies against; Wargrave, Denham, QPR and Old Kingsontian. We won all four games with the biggest final score of Brentford 6, Kingstonian 0.
Brentford Women are entering the Greater London Womens League 1st division and Brentford Women Development are entering the Greater London Womens League 3rd division South. With a big squad and two teams to play for it is the best opportunity for all ladies to play as much football as they can and be fully involved.
I will keep you updated on the Development team in full and a score update on the first team each week.
On Sunday 11th of September Brentford Women Development FC hosted their first league game of the season. We played South London Women at home (Lampton School) with the normal kick off time 2pm.
The team line up was; Julie Cartmel, Charlotte Tanner, Lucy Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Rachael Green, Emily Reynolds, Naomi Totten, Gel Burgess, Jennifer Bret, Nikki-Precious Lopo and MJ. Kelly Noone our substitute.
Brentford went into the game with lots of advice from their new manager Mo, the ladies were very excited to get started after a good preseason with the rest of the Brentford Women.
The first half saw a good opposition, pass the ball around an unorganised Brentford side. Within ten minutes South London made it 1-0 with a break through the defence. Brentford tried to combine passes together and worked their way up the pitch to Nikki Lopo up front but every time the South London’s goal keeper was able to sweep up the ball. Not long after South London Women make it 2-0 when the striker picked up the ball from a poor goal kick. Brentford still tried and worked really hard pushing forward but South London Women came on the attack again making it 3-0 just before half time. (HT 3-0)
The second half changed everything for the bees players. Even in the hot weather conditions Brentford Women pressed on in the second half with a reshuffle of positions. Brentford began to string many passes together around the South London midfield. Brentford made it into the oppositions box many times but the final finish did not find the back of the net. Naomi Totten explains how Brentford ‘worked together in the second half and worked for each other’. It wasn’t long until Brentford got a goal back from Gel Burgess who celebrated by doing the worm! (3-1)
It was turning out to be a good game, South London Women managed to nip another goal making it 4-1. Brentford still pushed hard and were on the attack again when Naomi Totten managed to get the ball into the back of the net. Finial score 4-2 to South London Women.
Spirit was high within the Brentford camp at the end of the game due to the positive second half and the team are looking forward to going again next week.
“We are one team and we work together to support each other and play a game that we love”
