Brentford kicked off exactly the way the manager could have hoped for, hungry, animated, first to every ball.
Brentford were putting in the sort of performance of s team top of the league. Fearless, in possession and strong in a tackle. Lisa GRANT, Alia HAGGAG and Sara EZZAHIRI were linking up well offensively and causing panic in the opposition back line, meanwhile the rest of the team made sure they were solid defensively.
Brentford’s first meaningful attempt saw a classy finish from Sara EZZAHIRI. Great rotations from the 3 offensive players saw Sara EZZAHIRI round the keeper to slot home. Brentford didn’t stop there, they were on the hunt for more. Brentford had to withstand some awkward moments with Sasha TREADAWAY and Lisa Board both making strong last ditch tackles.
This only spurred the team on and when Lisa GRANT picked up the ball in the centre of the park, she played an exquisite through ball for Sara EZZAHIRI to run onto, it was inevitable Sara EZZAHIRI would score, making it 2-0. Brentford were playing great and the score line reflected that.
35 mins in a lapse of concentration saw a cross come in the Brentford box that wasn’t dealt with adequately enabling the striker to slot home from 5 yards. Brentford still pushed on, pushing for a third still playing with the same intensity. It was a close game, as legs started to tire Wimbledons number 19 started running the midfield with her strength and creativity, Mollie HOLMES stuck to her task well with Sophie TROTH battling hard to stay close to her.
With 37 mins played a freak bounce outfoxed Rebecca COLLINS in goal and bounced over her only to hit the crossbar, unfortunately the Wimbledon striker was first to the rebound making it 2-2. With 8 mins to play it was literally a case of trying to get to half time level, which Brentford did.
At halftime some words of wisdom and calm were whispered to the team with a simple message of “If they carry on with that drive, class and determination they will win the game”.
Brentford kicked off the second half and with literally the first touch from the taking centre Brentford had lost the ball and put Wimbledon on the attack. Number 19 for them was now becoming integral in everything. She set up their third with a powerful run and pass which saw the striker slot home to make the score 2-3. Sonyia JONES was brought in to give Brentford an outlet and almost at immediately almost scored with a strong run which just lacked a clinical finish. Number 19 wasn’t finished there, she wriggled through a few challenges to cross for the striker to again slot home making it 2-4. Brentford again went down the other end with a shot by Alia HAGGAG which was stopped by a last ditch block. There was still time for one more goal, another mix up involving the defenders allowed the striker through for an easy finish.
Eda DEMIRALAY, Lucy GIBSON, Shayni MARRINER and Gel BURGESS were brought on in the hope of a revival but it wasn’t to be.
The score finished 2-5.
