First training session of the year outside! Jamie put on a good session of technical ball work and lots of match time at the end. From the double header against Battersea and Wandsworth it was clear that we had not played in a few weeks.
Plenty of game time at training allowed us to get used to playing together again ready for our match on Sunday.
Our fixture was against Tottenham Hotspur, who we beat 5-4 at home earlier on in the season. It was our second time playing at the Frederick Knights Sports Ground. Last season we beat them 6-2 in the cup from the league below. Also where Manuela played her first 11 aside game with us Ladies.
The team line up was; Caroline, Sophie Lee, Manuela, Me (Charlotte), Amber, Lisa, Sophie T, Lavana, Lucy G, Ashley and Tia.
Before the game we had a minutes applause for the Tottenham Hotspurs Chairman who passed away recently. This was the development squads first game back and all wearing black arm bands to show respect.
We started off really well considering the 10:30am kick off that we were not used to. We got the ball down and played it around testing out Hotspurs back four. 7 minutes in Left Back, Amber, passed through to Ashley who had a shot on target for the keeper to save.
Lisa had a nearly one on one chance blocked getting through. With great combination passes in the middle, we kept trying to get it through to Ashley and Tia up top with good use of the left wing but Spurs kept cutting us out. 25 minutes in Spurs broke through our back four and shot outside the box just over the next.
That did not stop us though, Lavana received it off Caroline from the goal kick, then flicked it over for Ashley who just shot wide. Straight after, Spurs messed up their goal kick which Ashley got on the end of and hits the post but scores the rebound.
1-0 to the Bees. Sophie T came off for Sonja in the middle of the field. Spurs were trying to find an equaliser before half time but had two shots saved by Caroline.
We were one nil up at half time.
Second half it was game on! Sophie’s T got back on for Lucy G. We were playing well, getting the ball down and playing it around. Both teams really wanted a win for many different reasons.
Spurs had a free kick on the edge of the box that went just over the bar. Lavana managed to run free on the left hand side and had a shot saved. Spurs unfortunately got a goal back in the 65th minute making it 1-1.
From the off, the ball got passed to Tia on the right hand side who had a shot, the keeper pulled off a great save to make it gout from a corner.
Not long after Ashley crossed the ball into the box for Lavana to catch onto it just to put it wide. After an attack from Spurs, Manuela picked up the ball in her own half and went up into the attacking third. Manuela got to their box for their centre back to handball it, whether it was inside the box or not the referee gave a free kick on the edge of the box. 87th minutes Lavana steps up to curl the ball into the top left hand corner. GOAL!!! And a brilliant one too!!! 2-1 Brentford. We just had to hold on now, fighting really hard.
With some tired legs on the pitch and into a very very long two minutes of injury time Spurs find the back of the net, making it 2-2. Not long after the restart the ref blew the final whistle. A great battle finished 2-2.
A great game to watch and play, we battled hard and got a point. In the last 5 games we have drawn 3, won 1 and lost 1.
We have 3 games left this season and are still in a cup, hopefully we can go out of this season with our heads high.
This weekend Brentford FC play Cardiff City. It is also Ladies Day at Griffin Park. As some of you are aware I volunteer at Grey Court Secondary School on a Tuesday afternoon playing football with the girls. Supporting them and teaching them to love the game.
Please look out for the girls doing the guard of honour at the game on Saturday.
Bees you later
