Charlotte Tanner reflects on a six all draw for Brentford Women’s FC in this latest blog.
In training this week we worked on being more physical on the field and heading the ball. We also worked on attacking in 1v1 situation.
Yesterday we played Watford Development Squad who are sitting in third place in the league whereas we are sitting in sixth. We beat this team in the John Greenacre Memorial Trophy last year when Dana Johnson came off the bench to score two goals to help us win, super sub!
This Sundays starting line up was: Caroline, Amber ll, Judith, Amber l, Sophie Lee, Lisa, goody, bear, Lucy e, Ashley, Tia. Subs: Charlotte (me), Dana, Lucy G, Sophie T.
The game started well, with a few chances through on goal but their goal keeper played a high line. Therefore she was always there to receive the ball. Watford development switched the ball out to the right winger who got through but shot wide, pulling up with an injury. She got taken off and their substitute came on and scored with her first touch, but was then subbed again for the injured captain who had made a miraculous recovery. 1-0 to Watford.
This didn’t last long though, Ashley Cheatley scored from Lucy Easton’s corner with a lovely header. ‘Coming straight from the training ground’ I overheard Leigh say as I ran the line. 1-1. About half an hour in Ashley twinkle toed the ball past two defenders, the keeper came out but had no chance as Cheatley slotted it in the net, near side. 2-1 to the bees.
Unfortunately there was a clumsy challenge on the outside of the box leading Watford a free kick in a good position. This led to a loose ball into the box which the Watford striker was able to tap in. 2-2 game on!
That didn’t stop us though, with great counter attack from the bees, Lisa got it on the wing and flicked it over for Ashley to dummy a defender and score her hatrick, 3-2. I thought there was going to be another when Lisa picked up the ball from a dodgy back pass but a miss kick sent the ball wide.
Lucy Easton came off to change her boots and on came Dana Johnson. The ball was booted in the air falling into Watford’s box, the keeper came out, the defender tried to clear it but Ashley Cheatley nipped the goal. The half time whistle blew 4-2 to us!
Half time sub was made, Lisa came off for Lucy G. Ten minutes into the second half we had a corner, Bear’s delivery sent the keeper to punch it right out again for another corner. The second corner dropped loose into the box, where Sophie Lee nipped it into the back of the net. 5-2 to Brentford!
Watford Development came at us hard and a strike from outside the box got them back in the game 5-3.
From kick off we won another corner and Goody scored an over head kick to seal the deal at 6-3, well that’s what we thought.
Both teams and spectators did have a giggle when the referee had a tumble in the centre circle.
Amber LL and Tia came off for Lisa and Sophie T.
Back in the game somehow Watford quickly made it 6-4. Then 6-5 with a wonder strike from outside the box.
We tried to put our all in every ball but there was a scramble in the box which made it 6-6! Lucy G came off for Lucy E but by then there was five minutes left and it was too late.
Final score 6-6. We found ourselves scratching our heads again wondering what went wrong.
Special mention goes out to Sophie Lee who got woman of the match for her hard work, dedication and fight in yesterday’s game. Well Done Soph!
She was also mentioned in the managers comment on the game: ‘I think it was a better performance than last week, we passed the ball well. Sophie Lee did a fantastic job at right back and fought hard.’ Leigh Begam
