Brentford Ladies extended their lead at the top of the Greater London Women’s Football League Division One with a 5-1 win to Comets Women’s FC.
It was a cold, windy and wet afternoon at Lampton School, the home of Brentford Women’s, and both teams struggled to deal with the weather conditions.
In similar fashion to when both teams last met, it was Comets who took the lead after Brentford gave away a corner in the fifth minute. A well whipped in cross caused confusion in the box and Comets pounced with a well stuck half volley ending up in the bottom corner.
Brentford lifted their tempo as a result and managed to claw one back fifteen minutes into the first half. After great combination play between Dana Johnson and Latoya Bailey, they managed to break through the lines of the Comets defence and Johnson finished by sliding the ball underneath goalkeeper.
The Bees continued to pile the pressure on Comets and managed to grab a second just before the half time break when Amber Luzar whipped in a brilliant cross to find Lisa Grant in the penalty box, who touched the ball away from the onrushing defender, whose momentum brought Grant down. The referee awarded a penalty and Victoria James stepped up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way.
Brentford returned after the break the better side and continued to find holes in the Comets defence.
The game was won in the middle of the pitch with Hannah Noonan and James’ brilliant range of passing and this was evident when Brentford grabbed their third. James played a pinpoint 30 yard pass through to Luzar who composed herself well to finish.
Johnson added a fourth, three minutes after and a fifth 10 minutes till the end.
This wrapped up a brilliant hatrick for Johnson and a great result again for the Brentford Women’s.
After this win Brentford have comprehensive increased their lead at the top of the table to three points and see their goal difference sit at a phenomenal plus 62.
