Leeds United 1 Brentford 1
6th March 2010

Tom Moore holds his head high as the Bees do themselves proud.

Brentford and their supporters had a day to remember as they held former Champions League semi-finalists, Leeds United to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road, nine years to the day from when Leeds lost 3-2 at Real Madrid.

Brentford, supported vociferously by over 2,200 fans, started nervously and Leeds forced Szczesny into making a save in the opening minutes. Despite Leeds having the early possession they were unable to make any meaningful attack on Szczesny’s goal with a large amount of long shots.

After the early bombardment the Bees started to find their way into the game, backed by the incredible fans who didn’t stop singing all game, and nearly stunned the hosts when Sam Wood was put through and Ankergren was forced to make a good save. Leeds put the Bees under pressure however failed to test Szczesny and the Bees went off at half-time to the sounds of their supporters encouragement.

Leeds came out strongly in the second half but were put under immense pressure from the fantastic Myles Weston using his pace to cause a lot of problems with Toumani Diagouraga and Kevin O’Connor running the show in central midfield.

Brentford made their spell of pressure count as an O’Connor corner was headed back into the six yard box by Leon Legge. Charlie MacDonald got the shot away and the final touch was believed to come off Ben Strevens to send the travelling army of Bees into wild celebrations.

Brentford had two good opportunities to double their lead as Diagoraga passed to Sam Wood when he could have had a shot himself. Charlie MacDonald curled a shot past Ankergren but also past the post.

Leeds, who have failed to score only six times this season in all competitions, got the equaliser as Beckford tapped home from one yard out after Szczesny could only parry a Gary McSheffrey shot.

Both sides pushed for a winner and in the five minutes stoppage time Lubomir Michalik almost broke Bees hearts as his looping header hit the post. The Leeds fans were filing out of the stadium in their droves to the Brentford fans singing “Is there a fire drill”. Brentford managed to hold on to take a well-deserved 1-1 draw.
