Lewis Price cost Brentford a passage to the second round at the first attempt and it will require a replay to get through. The on-loan Derby keeper dropped a corner into his own net and failed to command the penalty area as Gateshead scrambled an equaliser in the dying seconds.
The first half was very poor with neither keeper having any major test with the away fans cold at the Gateshead International Arena.
In the second half Gateshead came out stronger and took the lead in bizarre circumstances when Peter Winn’s corner aimed for the near post and Lewis Price inexcusably palmed the ball into his own net.
Brentford woke up and grabbed an equaliser soon after when a Dickson cross was met by Carl Cort to get the Bees back onto level terms.
The Bees took the lead on 70 minutes when a Sam Saunders free kick caused problems as Gateshead failed to clear and Kevin O’Connor fired home.
With seconds on the clock a Craig Baxter long throw caused a lot of problems for the Brentford defence with Price on his goal line Peter Winn fired home to take the game to a replay.
