BIAS in the United States
BIAS are pleased to announce the creation of the USA Brentford Supporters Club
John Kenkel is a 42 year old father of three young Bees supporters, and lives just outside Washington, DC. He approached BIAS and has stepped up to become our International Branch co-ordinator for all Bees fans living in the United States.
John and his family moved to Kew in 2012 and were a house divided, with John and one son supporting Liverpool, another son an avid Chelsea supporter, and his daughter a Swansea fan (she liked the Swan). Friends of the family invited the Kenkels out one chilly afternoon to watch Brentford take on Bradford City. A few PUKKA pies, a decisive 5-0 win over Crew Alexandra, and some great banter with fans and the family was determined to come back for more. However, what sealed the deal came on 18 April 2014 with the win over PNE and spending some post-game time on the pitch with the supporters and shaking hands with the players. While relative newcomers to the Bees family, after that, there was no turning back.
Unfortunately, John and his family moved back to the US in June of 2014, but took their love of Brentford FC with them. Since then, John has connected to a number of supporters all over the US who share in the frustration of being thousands of miles away from their club with little to no access to live games. He has also been actively recruiting new Bees supporters in a “soccer” mad nation, this includes naming the youth soccer team he coaches the “Brentford Bees.”
While the US does not have the number of Bees supporters as other countries, the ones that do exist are some of the most dedicated and avid supporters the club has. Many of the fans frequently fly back specifically to visit Griffin Park on match days and plan their work travel around the ability to attend matches.
With the growing interest in “soccer” and new fans discovering the game every day in the States it presents a fantastic opportunity for the club to tap into that interest. With an established US supporters group, and the push to promotion, the goal is to get the interest up enough to have more televised games, support and promote the club in any potential offseason friendlies in the US, and generally support the greatest team the world has ever seen.
If you are a Brentford Fan living in the USA please join our Facebook group for Bees in the US or email John.
