Brentford WFC Blog

Charlotte Tanner keeps us up to date with all things Brentford WFC in this latest blog

Hello All,

Due to the weather and the ground being so wet at Lampton School on Thursday we were shoved in the old gymnasium. With many ladies forgetting their Astros (me included) we were in for a sliding training session. Leigh did well to think on his feet and plan a session with the sudden change in conditions.

We started off with a quick game of IT and a brief warm up. We then split into two teams combining new members with the old for team games. Keeping the ball up in the air, possession and races. If your team lost there were indeed forfeits, I can’t remember the amount of burpies or press ups we has to do!

We then went into 2 V 2 small sided games, collecting points for your team. To finish it off we split into three teams for a bit of five aside. The weather is turning and I’m sure we will be inside more, therefore one thing I defiantly took from training is; Remember your Astros!!

This weeks game was against Tottenham Hotspur Development at home.

This time last year we played the same team in one of the cups, we were in the league below then so we had to give it our all. We had a female referee who had travelled a long way for the game and Manuela played her first game for us. We bossed it at the back and won 6-2, if I remember rightly. This is also Tia’s old club so she was a little nervous for the game ahead.

Today’s game was in the league and we really needed a win from the hard time we’ve had over the last month or so.

The starting line up was; Charlotte Poole, Sophie Lee, Manuela Naprta, myself (Charlotte Tanner), Amber Langston-Lloyd, Vicky James (skipper), Claire Richardson (Goody), little Lisa, Gemma (Spanish), Holly Isaacs and Dana Johnson. Substitutes were; Tia Prior, Sophie T, Lucy Easton and Judith.
I would like to Welcome Charlotte Poole on behalf of Brentford Women’s FC to our team. As a Goal keeper she made her debut today, playing the whole game due to Caroline Brooks being ill. Well done to Charlotte and I hope you get better soon Caroline.

We won the toss but changed sides so the sun would not distract us, things were going our way from the off. Brentford Ladies got off to a near perfect start winning the ball back quickly through Lisa Grant, who then played a perfect through ball for Dana Johnson to finish excellently. 10 seconds after they first kicked off Tottenham Hotspur Development had to do it again 1-0 down!!

The pressure was sustained continuously through the first half with good work down the left flank with Amber LL and Grant combining on numerous occasions and being a real threat. Vicky James held in midfield to allow Claire Richardson to drive forward and invited both full backs to offer width which made Brentford a danger both sides.

Brentford had girls playing their second games for the club and both made it onto the score sheet. Holly Isaacs scored her first goal for Brentford when turning a Grant cross in, Gema Lucero grabbed her first Brentford goal after a Grant shot was turned against the post and Lucero was the quickest to react in the box to force home from close range. Grant got another assist when setting up Johnson, who was dangerous throughout, for her 2nd.

New signing Charlotte Poole dealt well with the little she had to do in goal during the first half, Due to some good defending in front of her but her clean sheet was not kept intact until halftime when a Spurs counter attack undid the defence and a girl scored a one on one. 4-1 half time.

The second half began with Brentford playing forward and after some good combination play between Issacs and Johnson nearly scored again.

Vicky James was brought off for Tia in midfield and shortly after I was brought off for Judith. Brentford remained very much in control and added a 5th goal through Issacs again. The Spurs keeper played a high line, and was able to pick up lots of balls played just to heavy for the strikers to nip onto. Brentford created many other chances and unlike the first half did not make them count.

The tide turned after an appalling, high, 2 footed tackle on Johnson. This tackle left her with stud marks just under her knee and forced her off. Everyone was shocked further when the referee only produced a yellow card. Unfortunately Dana could not continue and was replaced by Lucy Easton.

This got spurs up for the challenge and scored regularly in the last fifteen minutes when Brentford went searching for the final goal to kill the game. Lisa Grant then went down with a dead leg and had to be replaced by Sophie T. With two minutes to go Spurs scored to make it 5-4 and really make an exciting finish. A good win for us, 5-4!

Brentford held on to win 5-4 and move to third in the league. The victory was made even sweeter upon hearing that top of the league Camden Town lost to bottom club Hemel Hempstead.

All to play for the Bees Ladies!

Next week we will play Colne Valley Ladies our local derby or shall I say my local derby. We have played Colne Valley several times within the last two seasons first in the cup and now in the league. They are sitting in second place in the league, one point in front with two games in hand. So it will be an interesting game!

Please come down to watch Lampton School, Lampton Avenue, Hounslow, TW3 4EP. 1pm kick off.

**Breaking news just in; Dana Johnson has only badly bruised her knee and shin from the tackle on Sunday thankfully no ligament damage!
Hope you recover fast Dana! We are also hopefully to see the return of our top goal scorer Ashley Cheatley!

Bees you later
